When I was visiting my good friend and fellow artist Valdoris Wright in Pelican Bay, Florida there was a terrible storm which later turned into hurricane Sally after it left the Florida coast. The first day after the storm had past Valdoris and I heard out to paint. We found some boats mored in the bay to paint. I was particularly attracted to one of the boats that looked a bit disheveled, Towels were draped over the entry, possibly to keep out the down pouring rain that had got on for days. The life raft was tethered to the boat ready for use. The sails down and but not neatly wrapped. The small boat had survived the storm. A little out of sorts but a survivor none the less. I wondered if there were people living on the boat that weathered the storm. I am a survivor. A survivor from many unwelcome turn of events in my life. I have survived but not unscathed. I think I identified with this boat and that is why I wanted to paint it.
